Airport teams work together to validate operations in trial of baggage handling system and tug route in the Customs and Border Protection Area.

Baggage handling system operational in International Arrivals

Congratulations to our Customs and Border Protection and Baggage Handling System teams on their recent tests of our new systems and tools. Partnerships between the ACAA team, Customs & Border Protection, airlines, airline ground crews and others made this important achievement happen. What is a trial?

To ensure we’re fully prepared to run the transformed PIT airport smoothly, we’ll be doing several tests – called trials – before opening day. A trial is a way to practice operating our new airport before Day One. Trials uncover challenges, validate our processes and build confidence so that when we open, we’re fully prepared to deliver a world-class airport experience for all.

We started with simple tests focused on single tasks. Over time, we’ve been adding more complexity as we move toward a full-scale test in advance of Day One.

The goal is to ensure every part – people, processes, facilities, and systems – is ready.

What types of trials and being conducted and when will they occur?

  • Tabletops have been completed. These planning talks with managers to review “What if?” situations help refine and shape the trials to come.
  • Basic Trials are underway and set to be completed in August. These trials test 35+ individual business operations such as wayfinding, parking and check-in. Participants are recruited from PIT badge holders, contractors and airlines (selected by department leads).
  • Advanced Trial, September 3: Following completion of basic trials, approximately 250 volunteers will participate in this advanced trial. This trial will ensure that multiple business areas work together effectively to deliver typical real-world outcomes, using volunteers as passengers in practice situations.
  • Integrated Public Trial, September 20: The Integrated Public Trial is our big test on Sept. 20. Our industry consultants will be selecting approximately 2,500 for the full-scale dress rehearsal. The team will be looking for a group that best reflects what a typical day may look like, and all types of travelers are needed for us to do that. The goal is to test how everything works from start to finish in one big event.
  • Emergency Response Drill, October 8: Pittsburgh International Airport will conduct a mass-casualty full-scale exercise in the new PIT terminal involving an active-shooter scenario. Emergency drills are part of our safety program at PIT. This opportunity to perform an emergency response drill in the new terminal before it’s occupied will provide additional insights for the safe, secure operation of the new PIT terminal for first responders and the ACAA staff.
