International Arrivals & Departures

Significant changes are coming to PIT’s international arrivals area, which began in July when the first part of the new baggage handling system (BHS) began operating.

On July 22, the new international baggage belt in Concourse C was opened for use by PIT team members, airport partners and passengers. This marks the first part of the new terminal’s state-of-the-art BHS put into service. It marked an important milestone in the renovation of the U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) facilities.

For international arrivals, the transformed PIT experience will mean shorter walking distances, faster processing and a more seamless passenger journey. While most travelers will not notice the behind-the-scenes changes, team members will see a cleaner, modern space built specifically to improve the passenger experience.

Who’s impacted by the new BHS?

  • Airline ground crews had the most significant adjustment as they began using the new baggage belts immediately. They participated in a basic trial on July 16 to get familiar with the new process.
  • Customs and Border Protection also had procedural changes and took part in those the same trials.
  • All other team members who are part of international arrivals should be aware of the change so they can help guide passengers if needed.

The new BHS is just the beginning of improvements to the international arrivals and departures area. Upcoming phases will include new CBP office space, updated passenger processing areas and exterior gate upgrades to handle more wide-body aircraft. Advanced systems will improve operational efficiency and the overall experience for passengers, partners and team members alike.

All of this will lead to the opening of the new International Arrivals corridor within the new terminal.
