Pittsburgh International Airport likely isn’t going to prompt “destination dining” in a game of word association. Nevertheless, nearly anyone who travels by air will end up eating there at some point, and the Allegheny County Airport Authority has made meaningful strides to bring more local operators into the fold prior to and during its $1.7 billion overhaul.
If you’re hungry at the airport, consider skipping the national chains and choosing a locally owned business. There are a bunch of them, and the quality is surprisingly high at nearly all of them. (Indeed, I found a few airport locations outleap the original spots.) “You know how people in big operations say, ‘We support local,’ but don’t really mean it? Here, they truly do. They’ve been supportive in making it easy to navigate any logistical issues,” says Derek Davies, owner of Cafe Conmigo, one of the airport’s latest food-and-drink openings.
