As the opening of the new $1.7 billion terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport nears, members of the media were given a behind-the-scenes look this week. Led by Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis, as well as Siri Betts-Sonstegard, SVP of experience and design, and Paul Hoback, EVP and chief development officer at the Allegheny County Airport Authority, the tour on July 23 showed off some of the people-centered aspects of the new terminal’s design.
“When people come to airports, they are stressed, and the people who take care of the passengers and meeters and greeters, they can also feel stressed,” Cassotis said during the tour. “So we want to make sure we are making this terminal, this beautiful building, actually deliver the services it needs to deliver to people.” The new terminal is expected to be open to passengers sometime in the fourth quarter. On Sept. 20, the airport will be conducting a testing day, where between 2,000 and 2,500 members of the public will be invited in to experience the new terminal via tests and simulations. Airport officials said that they’ve received over 18,000 applications from those looking to participate.
