Pittsburgh International Airport’s new $1.7 billion terminal is now 92% complete and construction is running ahead of schedule, according to airport Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer Paul Hoback. “We’re a little further along in different areas than we thought we would be,” Mr. Hoback said, speaking over the buzz of workers’ power saws during a tour of the facility on Wednesday.
Airport officials had previously set 92% as a threshold for “substantial completion,” which signified the terminal was ready for its first customers. But passengers won’t be flooding through the terminal’s doors just yet — it remains on track to open in the fall, but it will now be as much as 94% complete when it does, Mr. Hoback said. The airport has expected to complete the last leg of construction following opening day. Some lucky locals will get an exclusive first peek during the terminal’s official dress rehearsal on Sept. 20, where volunteers will help to test its various functions, from the parking lot to the security checkpoints. More than 18,000 people responded to PIT’s call for volunteers earlier this month, and between 2,000 and 2,500 will participate in the trials, airport CEO Christina Cassotis said.
