All eyes will be on Pittsburgh International Airport on Saturday morning with the latest large-scale trial of the airport that will pave the way for a specific opening date of the $1.7 billion landside terminal. The trial is the second formal public trial, with the first in September, with the aim of making sure all the systems are ready for passengers when the existing 33-year-old terminal is shut and the new one opens. Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis during the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s regular meeting Friday said the opening date would be announced “very soon.”
“We’re not doing it until we’re ready,” Cassotis said. A big test will be Saturday’s public trial, which will have about 2,000 participants that will simulate a busy hour of activity at the new terminal. It will have about 1,400 bags going through everything, including the Transportation Safety Administration’s new scanning system.
