It was a major day for air travel in the region as the new Pittsburgh International Airport terminal officially opened its doors on Tuesday to air travelers for the first time. The transition to the new terminal began at 2 a.m., with the opening of the public roadway to the new terminal and the closure of the roadway to the Landside terminal.
Check-in at the new terminal kicked off at 3 a.m., with the first departures occurring between 3 and 5 a.m. “This is a new front door for our region, and we’re really pleased that things are going well,” said Bob Kerlick, director of public affairs. “It’s been a pretty seamless travel experience for folks that are coming in, and that’s because we’ve been trialing and testing this terminal for months and months. So, while it’s Day 1 for a lot of folks that are flying out, it’s not Day 1 for us.”
