The $1.7 billion landside terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport is nearly ready to open.
Why it matters: Pittsburgh’s air travel is finally moving into the 21st century after more than 33 years without a major upgrade. The airport hosted the press and the public for an open house Saturday with dozens of officials and elected officials.

Context: Airport officials call the project, first proposed in 2017, a “right sizing,” as the new 811,000-square-foot terminal is being built directly up against the current airside terminal, eliminating about one-third of its gates that are rarely used. The new placement means passengers will walk just 140 feet across a pedestrian tunnel after they clear security, instead of using the half-mile underground tram, which will be eliminated.
