Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has made history as the first airport to be awarded Universal Design Certification from the University at Buffalo’s Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA Center), underscoring its global leadership in accessibility, inclusivity, and human-centered design. This recognition establishes PIT as a benchmark for universal design and family-friendly travel in the airport sector. It reinforces PIT’s position as not just a transportation hub, but a model for universal access and inclusive design worldwide. The certification recognizes the airport’s unwavering commitment to creating an environment that is functional, flexible, and welcoming for all travelers—regardless of age, size, ability or circumstance.

This certification also directly aligns with the airport’s newly reimagined Kids Play Area, which sets a new standard for inclusive public spaces in airports. Improvements such as the Kids Play Area reflect PIT’s dedication to making travel happier, healthier and more seamless for all.
